Headaches can really put a damper on ones productivity, mood, and quality of life. There is no absolute when defining the cause of migraines however genetics, environmental factors, and tension all appear to be contributors to migraines. The pain is a result from the activation of the trigeminovascular system in the brain. Chemical imbalances such as serotonin (a pain regulator in the nervous system) may also be involved. Migraines cause a drop is serotonin levels, which can cause the trigeminovascular system to release substances called neuropeptides. The released neuropeptides move to the meninges (the outer covering of the brain) resulting in headache pain.
How We Handle Migraine:
Massage is a useful tool to relieve and manage both stress and tension, two factors contributing to the cause of migraines. According to the Touch Institute of the University of Miami School of Medicine the implementation of massage therapy decreases the occurrence of headaches, sleep disturbances, and distress symptoms. Massage can also help boost serotonin levels in adults with migraines.
